God-moding:
Determining another character's movements, thoughts, or speech. Don't do this under any circumstances; it's extremely unfair. If you play more than one character, you still cannot have one rule another's actions.
This is god-moding: Bobby-Joe scowled and punched John in the face.
This is proper: Bobby-Joe scowled and moved to punch John in the face.
"John" gets to decide whether or not the punch hits the mark.

Mary-Sue:A highly improbable or impossible character. Usually, Mary-Sue (male or female) is perfect; no flaws, amazing powers that nobody else has (ex. telepathy, control of weather), and odd physical traits (ex. eyes that change color). However, s/he can also be characterized by a tragic past, an emotional disorder, etc. A synonym for Mary-Sue is "cliche". Nobody likes Mary-Sues except for the author and other Mary-Sues and s/he is the bane of many a quality Role-player's existence. Wikipedia explanation.ED explanation.Litmus test.

IN & OOC:
IN = In Character - This is you as your character; in Hogwarts
OOC = Out of Character - This is you in your natural state; in real life.
Ex. In Character/Out of Character:
Bobby-Joe Jackson strolled through the corridors.
(((OOC: Oops, one-liner!)))

Past Tense, Third-Person Limited:
Past tense, third person is when you type as if your character's actions have alread happened and you are merely recording events. Limited means that your character only knows what's going on inside his or her own head.
NO: Bobby-Joe walks into the Great Hall and looks around. NO: I walk into the Great Hall and look around. YES: Bobby-Joe walked into the Great hall and looked around.
