Alas, the inevitable rules. We all know that nobody likes reading them, and Merlin knows I don't like writing them, but that's just too bad for all of us. Just follow the rules and we ought to get along just fine. I'm not writing these for my own edification.
Rules are subject to change. Be sure to check in for updates.
1. If a grievance cannot be settled, bring the matter to me - in a PM if it is Out of Character, in my office if it is In Character.
2. In registering, you will have to agree to follow the Proboards Terms of Service. Even I must comply with these.
3. Respect the Admin and all staff members.
4. There is a difference between In Character and Out of Character. Try not to confuse the two. If another character insults yours, you should not take it personally. It's just a game.
5. Minimal cursing is allowed (as you would see in the the Harry Potter books). Don't get carried away and use especially foul words and don't make every other word a curse. Try using a thesaurus instead.
6. Violence must be kept to a minimum as well. Fighting and dueling is allowed (though a staff member may choose to interfere and dole out punishments), but don't get overly graphic. Character death is also allowed, but remember not to get graphic and you can only kill off your own character (if you do this, please make it interesting and not cliche; no sparkle rainbows of happiness).
7. NO GOD-MODING, for the love of Dumbledore's knitted socks! (For an explanation of god-moding, click here).
8. Originality is key. Try your very best to come up with a character who is not just like the canons we all know. Also, stay away from over-used traits and powers. Just because it's not common in the books does not mean every other Mary-Sue hasn't used it. 9. Post in past tense, third-person. Also, use proper punctuation and quotation marks.
10. There is a spell check on both full and Quick Reply for a reason. Use it.
11. Keep OOC comments short. I don't want to see entire in character threads made up primarily of OOC.
12. Try your best to stay away from one-liners. Consider adding more than just what you character says; add in actions and thoughts for higher-quality posts. If you try, your writing will keep getting better.
13. When you apply in the Sorting Hat, you will see "And the answer is . . ." When you see that, give your answer to this question: "Where would you most like to visit?
